Year abroad overview
Your IGP year abroad occurs in your 4th year at NAU. It includes two parts: coursework (both in your subject major as well as your language or cultural studies major) and an international internship or research experience.

What to expect
Fall semester
Take courses at an NAU exchange partner institution in your subject major, language, and cultural studies
Spring semester
Complete an internship, research, or fieldwork experience abroad in your discipline, while immersed in your host country culture and often, language
You’re getting ready to go abroad, now what?
What to expect for your FALL semester abroad?Ìý Accordion Closed
- Enroll in classes at your host institution – Take classes in your language of study and/or in English (CCS majors).Ìý
- Participate in your LAN 340 online class.Ìý
- Complete your language checkpoint C.Ìý
- Maintain communication with your IGP region lead, your EA advisor and your faculty mentor.Ìý
- Secure an internship opportunity within your host institution and/or surrounding areas.Ìý
- Immerse yourself in the culture by joining a university club or organization.Ìý
What to expect for your SPRING semester abroad?Ìý Accordion Closed
- Complete your international internship or research experience (540 hours).
- Enroll in a language class to keep up with your proficiency (if time allows).Ìý
- Submit internship course deliverables to your instructor/faculty mentor.Ìý
- Complete your language checkpoint D.Ìý
- Maintain communication with your IGP region lead, your EA advisor and your faculty mentor.Ìý
- Enroll in classes at NAU for your 5th year and apply for housing.Ìý
- Immerse yourself in the culture by making time to travel and explore.Ìý
