Northern Arizona University has been offering Bachelor of Science degrees in Recreation since 1961, and a Bachelor of Science in Geography since 1967, although geography courses have been taught at NAU since 1934. The department of Geography, Planning & Recreation (GPR), a unit within the college of Social and Behavioral Sciences, was created in 2003. The GPR department promotes experiential and applied educational experiences and serves both on campus and online students.
The geography program offers undergraduate and graduate degrees that specialize in Community Planning and Development, Geospatial Technologies and Human-Environmental Systems. The Parks and Recreation Management (PRM) program prepares professionals for rewarding positions in the exciting field of parks, recreation, and leisure services through traditional campus and web based courses.
