(LOUIE Credit for GLC Majors & Minors / Undergrad and Grad Students)

The Department of Global Languages ​​and Cultures announces the Borozan Memorial Modern Languages ​​Scholarship for the Academic Year 2024/2025. A total payout of $17,585.27 will be awarded to seven qualified students. Each student will receive $2,512.18 disbursed as follows: $1,256.09 will be applied to their LOUIE accounts in Fall 2024 and $1,256.09 will be applied in Spring 2025. If tuition is already paid, and a student has no outstanding charges in LOUIE, s/he/they may take this money in the form of a refund. Students must be full time and attending both semesters (current seniors should NOT apply unless they are an undergraduate planning on attending NAU for a degree in Spanish MAT).

Other Regulations: All applicants must have been accepted to NAU and attend full time during the entire academic year. This scholarship will be awarded on the basis of merit, academic accomplishments, and to undergraduate and/or graduate students who are pursuing a major or minor degree in a Global Language. To apply, you must have a high school or college GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0-point scale and submit a completed application by 5:00 PM, Monday, April 15, 2024.

The required attachments are:

1. A resume (not to exceed 700 words).

2. An essay (not to exceed 700 words) explaining the following:
�� �� • Why you are studying a Modern/Global Language?
�� �� • What plans do you have to use this language or these languages ​​in the future?
�� �� • Please explain whether you have studied abroad, where you studied, and/or whether you intend to study abroad in the future. NOTE: This scholarship does NOT require students to study abroad.

3. A signed “NAU’s Scholarship FERPA Statement” for release of information (form is second page of application).

(Study Abroad Assistance for GLC Majors and Minors)

The Elaine Loven Memorial Scholarship is for students who are studying abroad in the Fall 2024 and/or Spring 2025. $2,447.00�� will be awarded to one qualified student.

This scholarship will be awarded on the basis of merit, academic achievements, and to undergraduate or graduate students who are pursuing a major or minor degree in a global language.

Eligibility
This fund will be used for a scholarship for study abroad for an undergraduate or graduate student in the Department of Global Languages ​​and Cultures, with the following criteria:

• minimum GPA of 3.0
• preference to a student completing a German major, emphasis, or minor
• preference to a student who plans to study abroad in Europe

Scholarship recipients will be selected by the Department of Global Languages ​​and Cultures Scholarship Committee in coordination with the university’s Office of Student Financial Aid. The annual scholarship award will be available for the semester during which the student studies abroad through a Northern Arizona University program.

Other regulations
All applicants must have been accepted by Northern Arizona University and be planning to study abroad in Fall 2024 and/or Spring 2025.

(Study Abroad Assistance for Spanish Grad Students)

This generous USD $5,000 scholarship was established by María Melinda Belle Portilla de la Fuente Evans in honor of her parents for a graduate student to study each summer in a graduate program in Spain. Scholarship funds will be used to cover the cost of transportation, housing, food, tuition, visas, and other expenses.

To apply each student must:

• Be enrolled full-time in the Spanish Master’s program at NAU.
• Have at least one semester of study in the program.
• Have a minimum grade point average of 3.0.
• Establish in writing your goal of being a Spanish educator.
• Enroll in at least one graduate-level summer course abroad (or the equivalent), approved by the Master’s program administrators.

It is important to know the following:

• Since Spain is quite expensive, normally there are costs that the student has to pay on top of the amount of the scholarship.��
• There are limitations on how the scholarship money can be used. The scholarship can be used to pay for registration, accommodation and excursions related to the program in which you enroll.

Application process:

Each applicant writes a 250-word essay in Spanish and a 250-word essay in English describing how this experience abroad will help them become a better Spanish teacher. (One can be a translation of the other.) Both essays are written in WORD format and sent as attachments to Joe Collentine and Yuly Asención-Delaney by�� March 4, 2024.

The committee established for this purpose will be in charge of selecting from among the applicants and the chosen person will be notified by the end of March.

The chosen person will meet with the coordinators of the master’s degree to choose the program and the classes that they will take in Spain. The class(es) the student takes must be approved by the coordinators. Upon receiving the notification, the chosen person must write a letter of thanks to the donor, María Melinda Belle Portilla de la Fuente Evans. Upon her return, the student must submit a report explaining the content of the class(es) taken.

It is important to remember that the student with an assistantship must enroll in 9 credits for the following semester to keep it according to the rules of the Graduate Faculty.

The Department of Global Languages and Cultures announces the NEW Gary Kane Scholarship for a student or students who are studying abroad during the Fall 2024 and/or Spring 2025 terms [excludes summer programs]. $4,750 will be awarded to one qualified student; however, if that student cannot accept the entire amount, due to issues that will adversely affect their other financial aid, a runner-up will receive the remaining balance:

This Fund shall be used for a scholarship for studying a modern language while abroad for an undergraduate or graduate student in the Dept. of Global Languages & Cultures, with the following criteria:

• Students enrolled in a modern language. Students must be seeking one of the following majors: Modern Languages BA, with an Emphasis in Japanese, German, or French; Spanish BA, Spanish BSEd, or Spanish MAT. Students seeking one of the following minors, Japanese, Spanish, German, Italian, Chinese, or French WITH at least one major from the College of Arts & Letters are also eligible. Please be aware that this scholarship excludes students seeking dual/double major degrees outside of the College of Arts & Letters, thus, excludes IGP seeking students at this time. Please contact Jessica.Wood@nau.edu for clarification.
• Students must have sophomore, junior, or senior class standing at the time they will study abroad;
• Students must be enrolled in a study abroad program approved through NAU’s Center for International Education (CIE).
• Preference will be made to students who plan to study abroad in the following locations and in this order: 1) Kyoto, Japan; 2) Japan; 3) Spain; 4) Germany; 5) Italy; or 6) France. If no qualified students meet these criteria then funds may be disbursed to students studying a modern language in another country.
• Upon completion of their study abroad trip, students should be willing to share their experience with their department and send the donor a note of appreciation (instructions will be provided).

The annual scholarship award will be disbursed for the semester(s) during which the student studies abroad through an NAU program. Deadline to apply is Monday, April 15, 2024.

Kenneth and Dorothy Lamm
This Fund is established by Kenneth and Dorothy Lamm (Founders) who deeply believe that study and travel outside the US provides students with experiences that will affect their lives and careers for many years to come. They believe it is important for our future leaders to have a broad view of the world that only comes from experiencing other cultures and languages. The Lamms, originally from Wisconsin, moved to Flagstaff in 2004 to make their home and enjoy the vibrant, active and intellectual community made possible, in part, by Northern Arizona University. As a young woman, Dorothy Lamm studied in Mexico City and that experience had a profound impact on her life. Later as a teacher she went on to take students on trips to Mexico.

The deadlines to apply vary by cycle

The Center for International Education (CIE) and the Department of Global Languages and Cultures (GLC) announce the Laski Scholarship for Studying Abroad in Germany. This scholarship is specifically for students studying abroad in the Federal Republic of Germany.

These funds shall be used as a scholarship by a graduate or undergraduate student with the following criteria:

• We encourage all students with financial need to apply for consideration (students must have filed FAFSA). If any student wishes to accept an amount less than the amounts below due to financial aid issues, please contact Jessica.Wood@nau.edu.
• Graduate/Undergraduate in good standing enrolled at Northern Arizona University
• Participating in an NAU study abroad program through the Center of International Education
• Financial Need (verified through NAU financial aid – students must have applied for FAFSA)
• Commendable Academic Record
• Submission of a 500 word essay describing what you believe the value is in studying abroad in Germany and when you look back on this experience, what do you hope to say that you have gained academically, personally, and professionally

Scholarship recipients shall be selected by Education Abroad and in coordination with the Department of Global Languages and Cultures and the NAU Office of Student Financial Aid. The scholarship award will be disbursed through your LOUIE account for the term during which the student studies abroad through an NAU program. All qualifying students are encouraged to apply. Vera Laski��

This Fund is established through a bequest from Dr. Vera Laski, late of Cave Creek, Arizona, by her Last Will and Testament. Dr. Laski fled Berlin as one of the very first women in the early 1900’s to receive a jurisprudence degree in Germany. She was also affiliated with the Sorbonne before immigrating to the United States via Haiti. Vera Laski was a published writer of plays, poetry, and fiction as well as one of the first anthropology scholars to focus on the Southwest. Vera Laski’s collection of Southwestern artifacts is housed in the former Museum für Völkerkunde (now Ethnologisches Museum) in Dahlem/Berlin. Upon request, each Laski Scholarship recipient is given a copy of an article on Dr. Laski from��International Fiction Review��that was published shortly before Laski’s death after years of interviews conducted by Dr. Marilya Veteto Reese.
