2022-2023 scholarships
Applications for Chemistry and Biochemistry Department scholarships for the 2022-2023 academic year are now available and must be submitted by Friday March 4³Ù³óÌý2022 at 11:59 pm. See below for descriptions of the various scholarships and awards. Chemistry department scholarships
All scholarships require the awardee be a continuing student. Graduating seniors are not typically eligible for scholarships, but may apply for the Clinton F. Lane and Kenneth Bean awards.
Arizona Society for Coatings Technology Scholarship
The Arizona Society for Coatings Technology provides this scholarship to support the scholarly pursuits of a student who is a full-time undergraduate senior or junior majoring in Chemistry or Biochemistry. Because the industry needs graduates with a strong chemistry foundation, well-prepared students demonstrating outstanding laboratory skills are preferred. Recipients must be US citizens or permanent residents, and residents of Arizona. A minimum GPA of 3.0 and an interest in polymers, paint and coatings is required. The recipient will be invited to attend at least one society meeting during the year awarded to present on his or her studies.
Charles Edward Price Memorial Scholarship
The Charles Price Scholarship was created in honor of a Chemistry student, Charles Price, who had a passion for Chemistry. In an effort to keep ÇàÇà²ÝÊÓƵ’s dream of pursuing his graduate degree in Organic Chemistry alive, ÇàÇà²ÝÊÓƵ’s parents established a scholarship fund to be gifted to a deserving Chemistry student with a recognized passion for Chemistry and a strong drive and work ethic that preserves ÇàÇà²ÝÊÓƵ’s own dream and passion for Chemistry, with preference given to those planning on post-graduate study in Chemistry.
Earle B. Hoyt, Jr. Chemistry Scholarship
The Earle B. Hoyt, Jr. scholarship is awarded to a student who has declared a Chemistry major and an interest in research. Recipients must have undergraduate research experience or be engaged in research for the semesters for which the student is awarded the scholarship, as well as demonstrated leadership potential. Prior awardees may reapply for this scholarship.
Russ B. Powell Chemistry Scholarship
The Russ B. Powell Chemistry Scholarship was established in memory of a former Chemistry student. Awards are given to continuing full-time Northern Arizona University undergraduate and graduate chemistry majors who demonstrate a strong commitment to and enthusiasm for chemistry. Financial need must be demonstrated.
Scott Savage Scholarship
The Scott Savage Scholarship was established in 2000 to provide scholarships to Northern Arizona University undergraduate chemistry majors with a minimum GPA of 2.5 who are active in extracurricular activities.
Vesto M. Slipher Scholarship
The Slipher Scholarship was named after Vesto Melvin Sliper, an American astronomer who performed the first measurements of radial velocities for galaxies, providing the empirical basis for the expansion of the universe. Slipher had a long career at Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff and the scholarship shall serve as a reminder of his amazing discoveries. The Slipher Scholarship is awarded to an outstanding Junior Chemistry major.
Science Enterprise Scholarship (Hayes Science)
The Science Enterprise Scholarship is is funded by Byron and Jennifer Hayes to support students with a vision to make a difference through the study of science. They believe that every motivated student should have access to higher education regardless of their background or financial resources. Recipients must be a sophomore, junior or returning senior, majoring in Chemistry with a minor in Biology, Engineering or Environmental Science with a Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and an interest in engineering, bioengineering and or environmental or biomedical sciences. Preference is given to first generation students, or those in need of financial help.
Chemistry department awards
Awards may be granted to continuing or graduating students. Not all awards will be given every year.Â
Clinton F. Lane Chemistry Research Fund
The Clinton F. Lane Chemistry Research Fund was established in 2007 to commemorate Dr. Clint Lane, the former Sigma-Aldrich Vice President who retired to Flagstaff and established a research lab in the Chemistry Department. The award will provide a research stipend to one or more students majoring in chemistry. Preference is given to junior or senior level students who exhibit a passion for chemistry. Students must be participating in undergraduate research with a strong preference for work being carried out in synthetic chemistry.
Craig Family Elevate Award for Sciences
Funds will be awarded to support travel, lodging, and research expenses for internships or other research opportunities. Eligible students must arrange for an internship or research experience to which the award will be applied. Funding decisions are made jointly with the Department of Biology.
Kenneth Bean TA Award
The Kenneth Bean Award is awarded to a Chemistry or Biochemistry major in good academic standing who has demonstrated outstanding commitment to teaching in and supporting the instructional labs and stockroom. Preference is given to students who have demonstrated community advocacy and volunteerism.
Scholarships awarded through the College of the Environment, Forestry, and Natural Sciences

Alan M. Bourgeois Scholarship
The Alan M. Bourgeois Scholarship is awarded to a full-time rising sophomore, junior, or senior with a major within the College of Engineering, Forestry and Natural Sciences with a minimum GPA of 2.85.
Paul A. Sciame Scholarship
The Paul A. Sciame Scholarship is awarded to a full-time rising sophomore, junior, or senior Chemistry or Biological Sciences major who demonstrates dedication to learning through hard work in the classroom and / or research setting. Prior recipients of the scholarship may reapply if they continue to meet the award criteria.
Procter & Gamble Science Scholars Fund
Chemistry or Biology majors at Northern Arizona University who have expressed interest in attending graduate school in either discipline, with a GPA of 3.0 or greater, and junior or senior status.
Scholarships awarded through the NAU Foundation
Dr. Don Gilbert Scholarship for Women in Chemistry
The Don Gilbert Scholarship for Women in Chemistry is named for Dr. Don Gilbert, an Analytical Chemist in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry from 1965-1998. The scholarship will be awarded to a full-time female student in good academic standing entering her sophomore, junior, or senior year. Awardees will be selected by the NAU Foundation on behalf of the Chemistry Department.
Other chemistry department scholarships and awards
No application is necessary for consideration for these awards. Recipients are determined by the Chemistry faculty.
ACS Analytical Chemistry Award
Recognizes the top achievers in Analytical Chemistry (CHM 320-425) for the academic year.
ACS Organic Chemistry Award
Recognizes an outstanding senior who has distinguished him/herself through achievements in research or advanced organic chemistry coursework.
ACS Polymer Chemistry Award
Recognizes an outstanding senior who has distinguished him/herself through achievements in research or advanced polymer chemistry coursework.
Biochemistry Award
Recognizes the top achiever in Biochemistry (CHM 461-462) for the academic year.
Graduate Student Research Award
Recognizes an outstanding graduate student who has distinguished him/herself through research achievements.
Graduate Student Scholar Award
Recognizes an outstanding graduate student who has distinguished him/herself through academic, outreach, and / or research achievements.
Inorganic Chemistry Award
Recognizes the top achiever in Inorganic Chemistry (CHM 350-450) for the academic year.
Junia McAlister Award
Recognizes the top graduating senior based on academic, outreach, and extracurricular achievements.
Nancy & Henry Wettaw General Chemistry Award
Recognizes the top achievers in General Chemistry (CHM 151-152) for the academic year.
Nancy & Henry Wettaw Organic Chemistry Award
Recognizes the top achievers in Organic Chemistry (CHM 235-238) for the academic year.
Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award
Recognizes undergraduate and graduate students who have excelled as Teaching Assistants.
Physical Chemistry Award
Recognizes an outstanding student who has completed two semesters of Physical Chemistry (CHM 341-442C).
Senior Scholar Award
Recognizes an outstanding graduating senior who has distinguished him/herself through academic, outreach, and / or research achievements.
Senior Research Award
Recognizes an outstanding graduating senior who has distinguished him/herself through research achievements.
Undergraduate Student Research Award
Recognizes an outstanding continuing student (rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors) who has distinguished him/herself through research achievements.
