NIRSA: Leaders in Collegiate Recreation
History of NIRSA
In 1950, Dr. William Wasson brought together twenty African American intramural directors from historically black colleges to attend the first intramural conference at Dillard University. This led to the formation of the National Intramural Association (NIA), with Dr. Wasson serving as its inaugural president. Eventually, the NIA became the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) in 1975.
Today, NIRSA boasts over 4,000 members across 700 campuses, including military installations, public parks, correctional facilities, not-for-profit organizations, and private enterprises. As a non-profit membership organization, NIRSA leads in various recreational sports areas such as training, professional development, intramural sports, fitness programming, sports clubs, recreation facilities, outdoor recreation, wellness programs, informal recreation, and aquatic programs.
