Student conduct sanctions
Description of sanctions
Sanctions are the outcomes in cases where a resident has been found in violation of the Student Code of Conduct and/or the Standards of Residence. Specific sanctions assigned to a resident are based on the nature of the violation, the impact on the community, and the resident’s previous conduct history. The staff member leading the conduct hearing assigns sanctions to a resident. Failure to abide by or complete any assigned sanction may result in additional disciplinary action, which may include further sanctioning.
There are two types of sanctions:
Active sanctions Accordion Open
Active sanctions are follow-up steps that require action on the resident’s part. Active sanctions are intended as opportunities for the resident to gain additional information or engage in additional reflection related to the policy violation.
Multiple status and active sanctions may be assigned, depending on the nature of the incident. Examples are listed in the sections below.
Contract termination
Senior Campus Living staff or their designee may determine that an individual’s behavior warrants the termination of the Housing contract. If this sanction is assigned, the resident must move out of their building within the prescribed period of time. The resident will not be permitted to live in another NAU living community for the remainder of the year and may also lose the privilege to reapply for housing and/or be denied access to living communities for a specified period of time.
Educational assignment
Educational assignments are tasks which are creatively applied with the education of the student in mind. It is essential that the assignments given have some meaningful relationship to the policy violation or behavior involved. Examples of educational assignments include a written reflection, a follow-up meeting, or going on rounds with the Community Assistants. Failure to complete an education assignment is subject to further sanctions.
Marijuana eCheckup to Go online program
Check up to Go is an online program with different modules for marijuana education. The program is designed to offer students an opportunity to reflect on their smoking patterns and receive feedback on their use. The program focuses on an individualized self-assessment and personalized feedback. All responses to the self-assessment remain confidential and the conduct office only requires proof of completion.
Referral to Healthy Choices program
Required follow-up with Counseling Services at NAU for alcohol and drug use assessment. The referral process typically includes an intake meeting with a counselor, followed by one-on-one counseling or a group session. These meetings focus on making informed choices related to alcohol and drugs, with an emphasis on risk reduction.
Reassignment to another building within area or system
A resident may be reassigned within the Area or within the Housing system when doing so would be productive for both the individual and others in the living community. This may be due to egregious violation of policy or repeated behavioral concerns. The resident will receive written notification of the sanction and will be required to move within a prescribed period of time.
Reassignment within campus living communities
A resident may be reassigned within their living community when doing so would be productive for both the individual and others in the community. The resident will receive written notification of the sanction and will be required to move within a prescribed period of time.
Restitution
Payment to the university or to other persons, groups, or organizations for damage to property or costs incurred as a result of violating the NAU Student Code of Conduct and/or the Standards of Residence.
Status sanctions Accordion Closed
Status sanctions are related to a resident’s status within Campus Living or their status as a student at Northern Arizona University. Status sanctions typically do not require action on the resident’s part.
Multiple status and active sanctions may be assigned, depending on the nature of the incident. Examples are listed in the sections below.
Contract Probation
Written notice to the resident that their conduct was found to be in violation of the Student Code of Conduct and/or the Standards of Residence. Future violations may result in more serious disciplinary action, including Contract Termination. Contract Probation is typically assigned for one to two semesters. Contract Probation is often assigned in conjunction with University Probation.
Denial of Access
Denial of access to and/or use of a living community. Denial of access will implemented for a specified period of time, as defined by the staff member who imposes the sanction. The resident will be notified in writing of any area(s) to which they are denied access and for what period of time. Violation of a Denial of Access is considered trespassing and individuals are subject to arrest and criminal charges.
Fraternity and sorority members who are denied access to Mountain View Hall will not be permitted to enter Mountain View for any reason, including chapter meetings or Fraternity and Sorority Life-sponsored events. Chapters will individually determine if this will impact a student’s ability to maintain membership.
Refusal of Entry to and Occupation of Living Community After Contract Termination has been assigned, the staff member who assigned it may determine that an individual must not reenter the living community after their personal belongings have been removed.
Hall Probation
Written notice to the resident that their conduct was found to be in violation of the Student Code of Conduct and/or the Standards of Residence. Future violations may result in more serious disciplinary action. Hall Probation is typically assigned for one semester.
Letter of Warning
A letter of warning to a resident that their conduct is in violation of the Student Code of Conduct and/or the Standards of Residence. The warning often takes the form of a letter summarizing the violation and warns the resident about possible future consequences if the behavior continues. The fact that the resident is warned should be clearly stated in the body of the letter which the resident receives.
Loss of Privileges
Loss of privileges restricts the resident from designated privileges within their particular living community, or within the housing system. The loss of privileges will exist for a specified period of time, as defined by the staff member who imposes the sanction. The resident will be notified in writing of those privileges which will be forfeited and for what period of time.
Parental Notification
Notice to parents for residents under the age of 21 who violate a policy related to drugs and/or alcohol. A letter will be sent by Campus Living staff to the resident’s parent(s) or guardian(s), indicating that a violation took place. The letter will not contain information about the specific incident, only that a violation occurred. Parental notification letters are typically sent for a repeat concern or a more severe first-time issue.
University Probation
Removal of the resident from good disciplinary standing with the university. Additional restrictions or conditions may also be imposed. Any additional violation of the Student Code of Conduct, the Standards of Residence, or the conditions of probation may result in further disciplinary action, including suspension or expulsion. Probation is assigned for stated period of time (typically one to two semesters) and until specific conditions have been met.
Appropriate University officials are notified of a student’s University Probation. Students should be aware that University Probation may affect other aspects of their academics and involvement in student life, including: financial aid awards, student employment, student internships, athletics, ROTC membership, education abroad, etc. Students are encouraged to seek out this information, as it may impact individual students differently.
