Mixed-Gender and
Gender-Inclusive Housing
In our commitment to fostering inclusive communities, we recognize the need to provide housing options that meet the diverse needs and interests of all students. While most living community rooms, suites, and apartments are designated as same-gender (all male or all female), NAU offers two alternative housing options.
Mixed-Gender Housing
Mixed-Gender Housing (MGH) was established in 2019 and allows roommates of any sex, gender, gender identity, or gender expression to live together in a more integrated living unit. MGH is reflective of housing opportunities available to students off campus where they can select roommates of choice. Students who may be interested in MGH include siblings, cousins, friends, or allies of varying genders or gender identities. Please note that all of the communities are coed, and MGH is specific to the physical room.
Gender-Inclusive Housing
Gender-Inclusive Housing (GIH) was established in 2012 with the explicit goal of helping transgender, gender non-conforming, and questioning students experience a greater sense of safety and belonging while living on campus. GIH provides a supportive and inclusive living environment where a student can room with any other student regardless of gender, gender identity/expression, sex, or sexual orientation. The intended purpose of GIH is to provide a safe, supportive, and inclusive living option for students who do not feel comfortable in gender-binary housing. Priority is given to transgender and gender non-conforming students.
Locations Accordion Closed
MGH rooms are not clustered together and may be located on any floor within every campus living community except for Campbell, Morton, and Gillenwater.
GIH rooms are located in all of Campbell, Gabaldon, Gillenwater, Honors, and Morton
Restrooms Accordion Closed
Traditional-style living communities have community restrooms shared by residents on the floor, and designated as single-gendered restrooms (“W” for women or “M” for men in the chart) or as All Gender restrooms (“A” for all in the chart). Individual shower stalls have long privacy doors, interior hooks, and no side gaps. Toilet stall doors have no side gap.
Suite, semi-suite, and apartment-style living communities have restrooms within the living unit shared by suitemates.

Application Process Accordion Closed
When completing your housing application, select Gender-Inclusive Housing(GIH) in the focused-housing options or Mixed-Gender Housing (MGH) under Room Gender. This will lead to and statement of understanding and questions to answer. Campus Living professional staff will review your responses to determine your interest and understanding of this housing option, and will confirm space availability. If space is not available or we have questions about your application, we will contact you to address your housing needs.
The review process for the 2024-2025 Academic Year will happen at the end of each month for applications submitted by the 15th of that same month. (ex: MGH or focused-housing applications submitted by November 15 will be reviewed by the end of month. Students will receive communication by the end of that month too.) Requests will be considered in the order they are received.
If you wish to leave your selected community, you will need to utilize the standard room change process available to students throughout campus. We strongly encourage you to consider the benefits and responsibilities before applying to these housing options.
Roommates and Room Selection Accordion Closed
MGH
Once accepted into MGH you will be able to browse, invite, and accept roommate requests, and to select your room through the housing portal. You will only see rooms and roommate options that are available for MGH. If you do not have a roommate preference, you can select your room at your designated room selection time and another MGH student, who may or may not share your same gender or gender identity, will select your room. Residents of unfilled rooms may be moved and/or matched with roommates to ensure only MGH residents occupy MGH rooms. All students are required to complete roommate agreements discussing preferences, communication standards, shared space, and expectations for each roommate.
Only MGH residents will be able live within MGH spaces.
GIH
Once accepted into GIH you will be able to browse, invite, and accept roommate requests, and to select your room through the housing portal. You will only see rooms and roommate options that are available for GIH. If you do not have a roommate preference, you can select your room at your designated room selection time and another GIH student, who may or may not share your same gender or gender identity, will select your room. Residents of unfilled rooms may be moved and/or matched with roommates to ensure only GIH residents occupy GIH rooms. All students are required to complete roommate agreements discussing preferences, communication standards, shared space, and expectations for each roommate.
Only GIH residents will be able live within GIH spaces.
Space is based on availability at the time of room selection and not guaranteed.
It is Northern Arizona University’s practice that students select their own rooms, not parents/guardians/family members. We encourage parents/guardians/family members and students to communicate about selecting a room and about any concerns or questions that arise during this process.
